Where has the time gone? It’s been 3 months since my last post – for shame! We spent most of November and December in Georgia to be close to our families for the holidays, and I guess since we weren’t “traveling” as much, I didn’t feel like I had as much to write about it. But we had a wonderful time, and I got some much-needed family time in. I miss everyone so much already.
We did take one quick trip down to Florida for a few weeks to visit friends and clean out a storage unit we still had down there, and on the way back to Georgia we decided to break the trip up a bit and stop for a night along the way. I picked a state park along our route somewhat at random, which turned out to be Florence Marina State Park. We continue to be impressed with the Georgia state park system, and this park was another nice find. While reading the brochures I read about another nearby park that had some hiking trails, so we took the dogs there the next day. Well, what a surprise this park turned out to be!
The park is Providence Canyon State Park, and it’s nicknamed Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon.” Even though it’s considered one of Georgia’s Seven Natural Wonders, the canyons are actually due to poor farming practices from the 19th century, which caused erosion. The result is quite beautiful!
I was struck by how much the colors reminded me of Bryce Canyon in Utah, which is one of our favorite national parks.
The hike around the canyons is a pretty easy 2.5 mile loop. At the canyon floor there are a few additional spurs that you can take in the canyons, but it was very muddy the day we visited so we didn’t do it. But we still very much enjoyed the loop hike!
So if you find yourself looking for a place to stay in southwest Georgia, I’d definitely recommend checking these two parks out!
We have missed you guys post. Need to check out Providence..we have stopped in Helen the past 2 years on the way to Ft Pickens. Currently in New Orleans then headed West.
I know, I’ve been terrible about posting lately! Helen is a nice area too. Hope you’re having fun in New Orleans!
Wow, I never would’ve guessed such Utah like terrain could be found in Georgia… beautiful and also a beautiful family portrait.
Right?! I never would have thought so either and I lived there for 12 years!
Thanks for the heads up on these two state parks in Georgia!! Love the red rocks. We may have extra time as we travel through Georgia this fall and I would love to see Providence Canyon SP.
It’s definitely worth a quick stop!
Great shots of the park.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful pictures. We live in GA so we really need to get over there and check out that park. It’s on my list. š
We lived in Georgia for years too…my husband even grew up there, but we had never even heard of this park!
We lived in Georgia 15 years and never imagined such a unique and beautiful place. Thank you for the revelation!
Yep, we lived there too and had no idea – it was quite a surprise!
We camped there a few times when we lived in Pensacola. Beautiful park! We really liked the GA state parks, too.
Yes overall we really like the GA state parks….although they are a little bit expensive!
Beautiful place! š
Yes it really is – such a surprise!
What a beautiful surprise! Definitely saving this for when we need to get away for a quick trip.
We want to visit this “Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon”. I’ve heard so many great things about it. I think we will be checking it out soon!! Thanks for sharing your experience!
